Lost.

The Spanish stand still as statues. Sad and old.

And in the thunder, the Turk laughs at the Spanish and enters into their minds.

A cry of a wolf.

Rolls of thunder. The night proceeds.

The Turk wears an antelope’s skull on his head. He dances in rhythm.

He kneels with his hands outstretched. Then he shouts and squeals and appears in shadows.

It starts to rain.

Some of the Spanish see him. Some of the Spanish believe what they see. Some do not.

“El Diablo!” They shout. “It’s the Devil. Can’t you see?”

The Turk appears closer. He bends time.

Torches exhaust in the rain. Moans of women fill the air. Some of whores. Some of mothers.

The visions appear.

Cibola. The grand city and all its glory. And in the trails of smoke, the visions swirl in flashes.

“The cities.”

“Look!”

They slip deeper.

“I saw the city. I swear to God I did.”

“Where?”

“I saw them too!”

They scream and holler. They cry and shake.

“It was Satan. I swear. I saw him. I swear!”

“How can you be sure?”

“His face was red. It was real, I tell you. Real. I felt it. I felt his breath!”

“The Devil, I say. I saw three heads and eight eyes. And claws. My God those horrible claws! It had to be the devil. There’s no other explanation!”

And the Turk grins, watching them from high up top the hill.
